Travel insurance is not currently listed as a standard entry requirement for tourists visiting Panama. Official tourism entry requirements focus on having a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, proof of at least US$500 in economic solvency, accommodation details and the reason for travel.
Even though it is not mandatory for most visitors, travel insurance is a smart idea in Panama. Medical care in Panama City is generally accessible, but costs can rise quickly in private hospitals, and remote destinations such as Bocas del Toro, San Blas, Coiba, Boquete or jungle areas may require extra logistics if something goes wrong.
A good policy should ideally include emergency medical care, hospital coverage, evacuation or transport assistance, trip cancellation or interruption, lost luggage and coverage for activities such as hiking, surfing, snorkeling or boat trips if those are part of your itinerary.
Travelers staying only in Panama City for a short trip may feel comfortable with basic coverage, while travelers visiting remote islands or doing adventure activities should consider stronger medical and evacuation coverage.
